Who Are Anonymous?

Anonymous is a well-known name within the cybersecurity world. They are a group of individuals that collectively work to hack various government institutions and have especially launched cyber-attacks against the Church of Scientology.

What Did They Do?

Anonymous had been relatively quiet until recently; now, they are actively cyberattacking Russia in retaliation for Russia’s march on Ukraine.

A tweet from Twitter account @YourAnonNews that reads "Nuclear weapons are weapons of evil. When a leader of a country is promoting a nuclear response, it is up to the people of that country to remove that leader by any means necessary. When a leader holds life on earth hostage with nuclear threats, they forfeit their leadership."

On Twitter, this has become known as “Operation Russia” or #OpRussia.

A tweet from Twitter account @YourAnonNews that reads "No nation deserves to be invaded at the whim of a madman's delusions. No person deserves to live under censorship where they cannot speak truth to power. As activists, we will always fight for the oppressed! We are #Anonymous #OpRussia".

While many dispute whether Anonymous has an official Twitter account, multiple accounts that claim to be Anonymous (or at least members of) proudly announce the achievements that the group has accomplished so far. According to one Twitter account, they believe that their cyberattacks are just like someone exercising their right to freedom of speech and right to protest.

A tweet from Twitter account @YourAnonNews that reads "Yes, we are for freedom of speech, but we also understand that when abused that freedom has consequences. When Anonymous shuts down websites, it's a protest. It's just like locking arms and blocking an entrance to a building."

This has likely led to some mixed reactions among some. On one hand, they are fighting to uphold freedom against a substantial threat to that freedom, while on the other hand they are committing cybercrime through their actions. Do the ends justify the means? That is up for you to decide.
